Statement
My practice begins with a form of bodily research I call sanpo — a Japanese word for walk or stroll. I place myself within a site, encountering materials and environments whilst moving between intuition and observation, theory and practice. It is through this movement and chance encounter that my work takes its starting point. Sanpo is not mere locomotion, but a continuous stretch of embodied time encompassing perception and documentation — a process of reorienting oneself in relation to the events and traces embedded in a space.
The materials I encounter are often those that have already passed through someone’s life or time, those that originate from a specific place, or those that shift gradually under environmental conditions. When engaging with a material, I begin by observing closely, unfolding its structure in my mind and tracing what relationships might be latent within it. Only after sufficient imagining do I begin to work with my hands, then set what actually occurs against what I had imagined, and question the structure further. Mechanical elements such as motors, pumps, and lights are approached with the same disposition — my interest lies less in the type of material than in how it relates to its environment. Form — whether installation, video, object, or participatory structure — is not fixed, but determined each time by the nature of the materials and the site.
This practice has been sharpened through repeated residencies in different places, where I have come to feel that I myself function as part of the environment. The climate, vegetation, and cultural context of a given place intersect with my own body and perspective. The frictions and discoveries that arise from this intersection become conditions I take on as I build the work. In a world where meaning and relationships are translated into signs and consumed before they can settle, I find that what most demands attention lies in the moment just before meaning becomes fixed — in the lingering of sensations that resist translation. Observing the subtle shifts that emerge between materials and environments, intervening, and remaining engaged: this is what making work means to me.
